1. Evaluate 26 ÷ 2 + 3 x 7 – 4 x 5 (3mks)

Solution

There are no parentheses or exponents in this expression, so we move on to multiplication and division, performing each operation from left to right:

26 ÷ 2 = 13

Next, we evaluate the remaining multiplication:

3 x 7 = 21 4 x 5 = 20

Now, we can substitute our evaluated multiplication and division back into the original expression and perform the addition and subtraction operations:

13 + 21 – 20 = 14

Therefore, the final answer is 14.

3. A watermelon vendor had 1500 watermelons. He sold 800 on the first day and 250 on the second day. He added 470 to the remaining stock on the third day.

a. How many watermelons did he have at the end?

Solution

To find the number of watermelons he had at the end, we need to subtract the number he sold from the number he had and then add the number he added.

He had 1500 watermelons and sold 800 + 250 = 1050 watermelons in the first two days.

So he had 1500 – 1050 = 450 watermelons left at the end of the second day.

He added 470 watermelons on the third day, so he had 450 + 470 = 920 watermelons at the end of the third day.

b. If he sold all the watermelons at an average cost of sh. 100 each. How much money did he collect.

4.  3/4 of the pupils in a school are boys. If there are 96 girls in the school, how many
pupils are there in the school.

Solution

To solve this problem, we need to find the fraction of the pupils that are girls and then use it to find the total number of pupils.

If 3/4 of the pupils are boys, then 1 – 3/4 = 1/4 of the pupils are girls.

If there are 96 girls in the school, then 96 is 1/4 of the total number of pupils.

To find the total number of pupils, we need to multiply 96 by 4.

So the total number of pupils is 96 x 4 = 384.
